What is the scientific name? On a somewhat scientific forum, using scientific names is preferred, so that they may be more easily searched by future members.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

There is Very little info on them so its very hard to find a possible Scientific name
Ants I am keeping:
none for now, planning on being more active this year

amblyopone?
Looks like it! they've only been seen every couple of years
So the genus is Stigmatomma, and the species trigonignathum.

Probably Only a couple sightings have been recorded
And a colony of them would be a jackpot

maybe... I think its called the bigfoot ant because its so rare.

well yes, but actually no.
this is because you would probably need to give them to the myrmecologists that are studying them.

Yea I've never touched one or even seen one
but they intrest me alot!
I honestly opened this post expecting to see ants with huge feet. I was sorely mistaken.
same here. Or an ant that was huge. Although I have heard of this somewhere before.

amblyopone?
Looks like it! they've only been seen every couple of years
"Every couple of years." They've only been seen 2 or 3 times in 70 years. that's a little rarer than one every 2 years.

yes.
I wouldn't trust any recordings it could've been paid formica ants dressing up as Bigfoot ants for the pictures
if you look closely at the pictures, you can closely tell that they are certainly different from formica IMO. I'd say they aren't fake though because i have heard many times about how rare these ants are and so that means its not a fake. tricking people for 70 years that you found a "rare" ant and disguising a formica into a "bigfoot" ant seems pointless.

It was, quite obviously, a joke. They even said PAID Formica. You can't pay an ant.
That one didn't land too well. lol
But you went right to debunking my scientific facts you might be one of those formicas yourself for all I know.
Can't trust anyone at this point.
sorry I didn't understand... my bad
