Here is a new journal on my formica subintegra queens. This is a slave making formica and the most specialized species in the sanguinea group (raptiformica), never leaving the nest except to raid and relying entirely on their slaves. I have 2 queens that have survived, queen 1 and queen 2. They were both caught in mid July, 2020 and were hibernated on october 10th. They were taken out on december 28th, and queen 1 laid her first eggs on january 14th, which are now pupae and the colony was transferred into a mini hearth today. Queen 2 laid her first eggs on january 28th and now has a bunch of larvae and are in a bamboo test tube.

Update February 25th, biological workers!

 

 

the colony in the mini hearth (queen 1) got their first biological worker today! she is really tiny compared to the hosts and much smaller than i expected, even for a nanitic.

Queen 2 now has pupae, and quite a lot more than queen 1. i expect a larger amount of biological workers when these guys emerge.

Apparently these slave raiding species can make small workers that are capable of raising brood and feeding others, at least from my understanding.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Not obligate slave raiders like Formica subintegra. Species such as F. aserva can, however.
