Hello I'm new to ant keeping and I recently caught this queen ant outside on the cement and I need help finding out what species it is. If anyone knows what species it is it would be greatly appreciated if someone told me

Yeah that doesn’t work either. One thing you could do is make a Reddit post on the antkeeping subreddit and link it here. The other way is to post the photo to the formiculture gallery, and then link the image here or if your on PC go directly into the “my media” tab after putting it in the gallery while editing a post and put it in directly.

Yes, that works! Things that would help us are:

Size of the ant (length-wise)

Was there any rain in the past few days?

What time was it? 

How does it behave?

 

I can assume that it is likely Pheidole sp. but nothing is absolutely positive, until more details are provided and/or we get a closer, more high quality photo.

IDing is one of the things I really need to work on for 2021, I really want to get better at it.  LOL.  Now that I think about it, my Formica queen is much larger and her gaster is much bigger so maybe you're right.

Dorymyrmex sp, probably bicolor. They are fully claustral and do best without any disturbances during founding.

I’m guessing it’s D. bicolor because it’s the only californian dorymyrmex with that color scheme. Dorymyrmex insanus is completely black, and dorymyrmex flavus is much more yellow, and much rarer.

D. insanus queens can commonly be this color. Remember, they are not likely all one species. This is most likely D. insanus.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Sorry I didn't reply before. But I didn't have any rain in awhile but it was very foggy and I caught her yesterday. She's about one half of an inch from head to abdomen

Almost certainly Dorymyrmex. I saw a few people mention D. insanus, and if that's the case it's very light. All of the D. insanus queens I have seen and caught are a much darker brown.

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

 

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood
