can you imagine how on our back foot humanity would be if all the ants of the world united and worked together? RIP us. This is very cool, but I hope people don't look back and shake their head.

Uh, yeah sure, we won't attempt it.  :D

 

Would this work the same with a claustral and semi-claustral species? I'd assume you'd just put sugars and proteins in the tube and only the semi-claustral would take the proteins.

Colonies: Camponotus humilior 1w, Opisthopsis rufithorax 11w, Aphaenogaster longiceps ~5w, Pheidole sp. ~235w ~15m, Iridomyrmex sp. 2q 1w, Brachyponera lutea 6w, Crematogaster sp. ~20w, Podomyrma sp. 1w

Queens: Polyrhachis cf. robinsoni, Polyrhachis (Campomyrma) sp. (likely infertile)

Previously Kept: Colobopsis gasseri, Technomyrmex sp., Rhytidoponera victorae, Nylanderia cf. rosae, Myrmecia brevinoda/forficata, Polyrhachis australis, Solenopsis/Monomorium

Key: Q = Queen, W = Worker, M = Major

Maybe, but depending on the species, a semi-claustral queen may view the other as prey.

Hmmmm. I should give this a try. I will try to do a tetramorium immigrans queen with a solenopsis xyloni queen maybe. I doubt it would work but worth the try.

Hmmmm. I should give this a try. I will try to do a tetramorium immigrans queen with a solenopsis xyloni queen maybe. I doubt it would work but worth the try. 

I'd look in to that... Do some research and see if their preferences are the same/alike. From what I know, they are. Make sure to document it if you do! 


Ants are Pets, not Pests.

I don’t see this ever working with a species like Tetramorium immigrans. Not a chance.

Yea I was thinking that because since they are Pleometrosis. But I mean you never know but it's very likely it won't work out.

Both T. immigrans and S. xyloni are aggressive species, so I'm in agreement.

It’s unfortunate I found this now…

Back in November, I made an ID mistake in founding so I now I believe I had two Brachymyrmex species founding a colony together… didn’t want to separate just in case I’d mistake was wrong(I didn’t officially ID) I accidentally left them in the area where I put heat loving species…(They were too close to heating pad)

What if you put two species in vinegar then in diapause together… they would form a very similar nest scent…(Maybe genus like Colobopsis and small Camponotus?)

Also, this isn’t multi genus, but I had an Odontomachus queen accept workers who were not near the nest for 3 days… could have been two different Odontomachus species though…

Has anyone had any luck recently combining two colonies. Since it’s the mating season now, queens shouldn’t be in short supply. After doing some research on my own I will also attempt combining species using different methods.

I do not believe this at all. 7 morphs of a predominantly black species with golden gaster? 1300 Camponotus queens in the same colony? Nah.

Anyone who wants to share their opinion?

 

Besides, any updates on the current progress of this Formiculture 'project'?

I have been an 'ant-husiast' for over 4.5 years.

I have kept over 80 species of ants so far.

Most of the species I keep has been collected by me during travel.

I am an amateur researcher and identifier, working my way to professional Myrmecology.

Well, my wife is from Bolivia and if you ask them, you can’t trust a Chilean as far you can throw him.

It's the same way for every country in SA there's always one country they don't trust. For Peru it would be Venezuela.
