I very recently got a P. occidentalis colony of about ~60 workers from Tarheel Ants, and they’re currently in a mini hearth. I want to get them something larger and I’ve heard that horizontal nests work best for them, but the only horizontal nest in my price range is a fallen fortress. How many workers could my colony get before outgrowing it?

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

I own a Fallen Fortress. About a thousand of my tiny Pheidole can fit in there. Pogonomyrmex are like four times their size, though, so I’d estimate 150.
As an aside, check out the horizontal nests I posted recently in the Pictures of Formicariums thread. I bet they would work great for your purpose. I could make you one for a good price.

Those nests look awesome! I would totally buy one if I had an external outworld to go with it. I did find a seller on etsy called UndergroundCiti, and it looks like their large nest would work really well.

Here it is:
