I'm on that joshs frogs website - which fruit fly culture should I buy?  I'm planning to feed to my Vicinus colony, and also to my fish bowls (Bettas).

Thanks for any advice anyone might provide!

It really depends on the ants you have. Melanogaster are better for smaller genera like temnothorax, tetramorium or tapinoma, while hydei is better for larger sized genera like formica, pogonomyrmex or camponotus.

I think Melanogaster is better in your case, mainly because they're small and your fish might have trouble eating the Hydei, which are much larger. My Camponotus don't seem to care if they get Hydei or Melanogaster.

I'd like to recommend the Drosophila hydei. They're slower growing, but IME I've not had any ant reject them. For whatever reason I have a Myrmecocystus mexicanus colony that will  throw away into the midden pile any Drosophila melanogaster I offer them, but absolutely go nutso pututso over the D. hydei . Just to be clear I'm not saying all M. mexicanus will reject D. melanogaster, because I have other colonies of M. mexicanus that have accepted D. melanogaster, it's just a particular idiosyncrasy of my largest M. mexicanus colony. Also assuming your Bettas are adults they should have no issue eating the D. hydei. Bettas I've kept in the past never had issue with eating them.

Are they? I’m hoping they are not, but if they are please move them into a proper setup immediately. Bettas need a absolute minimum of 5 gallons, and 10 gallons would be even better. They need filtration and heating, and you can not properly do any of that in a fish bowl.

I hope I’m not being annoying, but it’s borderline animal cruelty to keep a fish in a bowl. Again, I hope that you just haven’t seen this and that they are in a proper setup
