Hello y'all. I'm new to the hobby so terminology isn't my strongest, yet. So i was walking back to my car when i notice some ants scatted around the trail, i use a hand shovel to move some of the sand away and to my surprise, i found these guys 

 

1. Location of collection: Chatsworth 

2. Date of collection: 05/23/2014
3. Habitat of collection: dry
4. Length (from head to gaster):
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: redish orange. black random spots throughout the body  
6. Distinguishing characteristics: 
7. Anything else distinctive: 
8. Nest description: next to hiking trail

Probably Pogonomyrmex californicus. Did you find these around a nest? It looks like they might be unmated alates.

Hmmm, pretty cool in Chatsworth today.  Interesting to see Pogonomyrmex alates out of their nest roaming.  It will be hot this weekend there, you should revisit as it it warms up Wed-Sun.  May be an opportunity to catch queens, though it still seems a little early.

They already had mini flights all over southern california.
