I found some good rotted wood and put it in the jar. The lone queen had unfortunately died but the paired king and queen seem to still be going. There crawling around the wood and keeping close to each other which is a good sign. I was told that they are most likely Reticulitermes hesperus, a subterranean, dry wood teremite species, How long does it usually take for termites to dig out a colony? When do they start to lay eggs?

Their current habitat, I found the wood from my park and cut it up so it would fit in the jar. I gave it a saran wrap lid and put a tiny hole in it for some air, they currently live in my night stand. Side note, would I call this a terrarium, a formicarium or something else?

I’m not sure if it’s just the picture, but the wood looks like bark. Termites don’t like nesting near the outer bark, preferring the softer insides.
