I've got some Camponotus in a Aus Ants ytong founding nest. Would a Tarheel Fortress be the next move up for them? Thanks

No it's an add on. It's +8 bucks. I think its just a nest mate you leave empty for air flow.

I've been wondering, what's the removable vent? Are they worth it, should I've got one?

The removable vent goes on the lid. Its fine mesh that you can remove to feed. Since THA's lids are often a pain to get off, I would recommend it. The fortress comes with its own nestmates already.
