And if they don't work well why not?

Yes. I've heard of people housing Solenopsis molesta and Brachymyrmex depilis in them(specifically Mini Hearth XL)

You're going to want a Bifurcated mini hearth. Its pretty much the same thing, but smaller levels. I am pretty sure THA makes them more secure as well. Most small species don't like the cavernous space of the mini hearth, but it might work depending on the species.

They do work really well. Just make sure no pieces of sand get between the glass and the formicarium because it might cause a gap big enough for tiny ants to exploit. Tetramorium are really good at doing this somehow.

Mini hearths do work well, but if you're going for really tiny ants like temnothorax an atom nest works better. They arent publicly on the shop but you can special order them.

If you are going for super tiny ants, such as solenopsis molesta, I would either go for a bifurcated mini hearth, or an inception chamber.  I have personally talked to Mack about this and this is what he recommended for me.

If they're hardy like Solenopsis molesta then you don't need to get bifurcated.

I would recommend the inception chamber for tiny ants. I have a Solenopsis cf. molesta colony in one and it provides excellent viewing.

Yes mini hearths can be very good for tiny ants. But if you can get your hands on a bifurcated one, then that would be better.
