This is to prepare myself for next year when I can catch ants somewhere in the spring and summer. I would like some advice on where to look since I can't really think of anywhere. also to show Queens that you catch sometime next year.

There's no real place to go. I'm in the Bay, but still, I'd just say follow the rain. You can go to public places/parks. Even just walking along the sidewalk on a hot, humid day can yield many queens. 

However, i think Joshua Tree Park is a good place for desert sp.

ok. is it even legal to catch within joshua tree national park without a permit allowing you to do so? because I do know that around there are a lot of cool species just is it legal?

You can't catch within the park, but the area surrounding it is virtually identical so you can catch outside the park

yes, as well as acromyrmex or leafcutter ants. however, those are very advanced ants so i wouldn't recommend them if you are a beginner.

you can also find other commen desert species i'm pretty sure.

yes acromyrmex sure are one of my favorites. My very favorite are honeypots because of their repletes, and Leaf cutters are awesome because they grow the fungus and their looks are cool too.
