Hey all, just wanted to mention this new fun little book for kids.

Has real ant, spider, and isopod facts mixed in - though of course it's FICTION FOR KIDS so you also wind up with ants talking and using human tools and engaging in other anthropomorphic activities. But still, sure is more accurate than *ahem* certain mainstream movies I could name.

 

If you know some kids who are interested in bugs, esp. ants, isopods or spoods, check this out!

 

The Kindle edition has color pics and is much much faster to arrive, but yes, there is also a paperback edition.

Awesome, thanks! Just as a warning the printing seems to be reaaaaaallllly slow.  :facepalm: Like days and days slow.  :facepalm:

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

 

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

Yeah, that movie was hard to watch because there were a lot of facts that weren't true.

S.geminata are fire ants though. A. gracilipes are crazy ants if you shorten their name. Only male ants are called "drones" and I don't think that's even a correct term, they're referred to as males in official documents and antwiki. https://www.antwiki....#Winged.2Falate. Anyway I didn't watch ant man so I can't talk about how accurate it is.

The sequel book is underway, by the way, and has a lot of bees and wasps in it. But the third book hopefully will go back to ants.

Keep in mind none of the ants portrayed are meant to be portrayed completely scientifically, because that would make one heckofa boring fiction book for kids.

"The worker ant smelled the cuticular hydrocarbon signature of the approaching ant and ceased her threat display...."

"Then (character) was promptly attacked and dismembered by the hostile ant colony. End of story."

"But since terrestrial arthropods don't actually communicate and cooperate in this way, nothing like this ever happened. The end."

My son is finally old enough to read this book himself, and he loves it! He breaks out laughing while reading and says it’s “very cool.” I’ll write up an Amazon review soon.

Woohoo! There are two more books, too. The second is mostly about bees/wasps, the third one is a fictionalized tour of an ant nest. :D

(The fourth is mostly about ants + plants but haven't finished it.)
