Did you ever place them in a 50 gallon?
They’ll just dug it up until it’s a mess. I would move them into a more permanent formicarium, unless you want them to outgrow the new nest in a couple of months or maybe at most a year.

Update 3-16-2019
I'm pretty sure the queen has died. This colony has been getting smaller and smaller for months now, and I do not see anymore brood anywhere.

I'm pretty sure the queen has died. This colony has been getting smaller and smaller for months now, and I do not see anymore brood anywhere.

Update 8-4-2019
I found a few more of these back on 7-15-2019 in Taylor, CA, after the first storm of the season hit the desert.
I still haven't inspected the 10-gallon tank colony that I suspect is doomed. I will soon, because I probably want to move something else into the enclosure.

Update 11-16-2019
Well it's official, the large colony is dead. I finally cleaned that 10-gallon "Dirt Box" out, and there wasn't a single live ant left in there. I have a few new colonies I got last season. The largest right now has only 5 workers.

Well I'm down to three of the new queens/colonies left from last season. One has 10 workers now, and the other has 11. They both have about a good amount of brood too. The third is still just a queen with a pile of eggs.

This particular species does not do well with me. Your 11 worker colony is still better than I have ever done with them. I insisted on handling them too much and they insisted on dying. I have since been forced to learn patience with my Odontomachus colonies and may give Pogonomyrmex another go. Please assemble more large dirt boxes.

The last of the small colonies I had were either sold or died months ago. I do have some more queens from this season, so I will try to get another large colony going.
