I have wanted to catch M. mexicanus queens since I first fell in love with ants.

Huh? With that reasoning this entire forum is serving that very purpose as well to any illegal traders with access to the internet.

 

However there's plenty of people who could use the information who aren't illegal traders, or people who want to learn about a species regardless if they're able to keep them or not.

I agree, this makes no sense. If you really mean that, you are basically saying the entire forum is supplying info for illegal trading and how illegal traders can care for ants. If you also wanted to not show that, just remove how you cared for them and where you found them.

People who are gonna be illegal traders already know how to care for them. I'm assuming it's just so they don't find the specific spots they were caught, or it was deleted for personal reasons.

Well actually it is not so much about care. It is more on where they are caught

Hiding certain good anting spots is understandable... if you really want to keep them a secret, then that's up to you. You found the spot on your own, so why can't other antkeepers? A little selfish, but sure. But if you're saying you won't post good anting locations on the internet because of illegal traders, you are just paranoid. People who routinely sell a high volume of ants across state lines already have their own anting locations, or they buy ants from other keepers and resell for a higher price out of state.

By being secretive about locations with good ants the only thing you're doing is stopping inexperienced keepers from finding cool ants on their own and allowing the sellers who sell at absurd prices, or even "illegal traders", to have more buyers for those species. Making areas with a high ant diversity publicly known is a much better way to encourage people to catch their own ants rather than relying on purchasing all their ants from other keepers, or even the "illegal traders" you so desperately want to stop.
