I am getting my cousin into the hobby and was wondering if anyone had any low maintinance species for trade or for cheap. I am willing to do pick ups or shippings.

I would actually recommend Veromessor andrei. I don't even feed mine anything except seeds. The only times I have to open their formicarium is when I change their tube or to help a worker that somehow gets stuck under a tube. They are fast growing but not extremely fast making them very good.

Some good beginner species in cali I'd recommend would be stuff like camponotus, crematogaster, brachymyrmex, linepithema etc. Heck, you could even get away with solenopsis xyloni as those things could live in a trash heap and not care one bit.

I have some high elevation camponotus vicinus that require hibernation. Very low maintinance for the next 4 months.

Seeds contain a lot of protein; but yes, supplements of insect food is very beneficial.

this sp needs hibernation, 50 workers isn't a established colony.

not according to Nurbs I got this colony from Nurbs and he caught them in lower elevation which does not required hibernation.

I believe it's depending on location you caught them. Like C. Vicinus some of them require hibernation and some don't. U do see little difference between lower elevation caught vs higher elevation caught ants as well.

Quericola hibernate if they originated from a place that gets cold enough, so yes. You can't expect Camponotus pennsylvanicus from NY to behave the same was as C. pennsylvanicus from texas. Location matters.

This is true, I have some high elevation Camponotus vicinus that need hibernation, but the lower elevation variety DO NOT need hibernation. Of course the location matters depending on when ants hibernate. Lets not hijack the thread though.
