no! there are way cooler species available in california that she has access to, like camponotus quercicola and vicinus. and many others. and they are way less expensive than pogonomyrmex.

If i were you id honestly just buy a cheap solenopsis xyloni queen from someone in socal. Similar growth speed to argentines but 1000% better.
I doubt xyloni grow nearly as fast
they're true fire ants that can get like 5k+ workers in a year so I'm pretty certainI doubt xyloni grow nearly as fastIf i were you id honestly just buy a cheap solenopsis xyloni queen from someone in socal. Similar growth speed to argentines but 1000% better.

Are there any journals on people keeping these?
Linepithema humile is commonly kept, and they're a superb study animal. Hobbyists dislike them cause they're boring (or maybe they havent figured out how to make L. humile fun yet ) My advice would be to keep any ant you want, as long as you have safe and legal access to them and you know how to keep them. Personally I enjoy going out into nature in person more than I do staring at an estimated shipping date, but how you obtain your ants is up to you.

I would love to read a journal on them. Rn the only good documentation of a hobbyist keeping them I can find is from Ants Australia

This is hysterical. I have to say, I've been watching them for months now and have seen NOTHING INTERESTING. Do you have any clue if they hibernate in winter?
I don't think it has to do with their invasiveness like people say. Or ants like pheidole megacephala, solenopsis invicta, even monomorium pharaonis as some examples (lots of non-native/exotic ants around that people love to keep) wouldn't be so popular.
It more has to do with how boring they are. The most boring ant could ever be cursed with. Even if lived where they are native, they'd still be the most boring ant in the world. There isn't a single ant that is nearly as boring as Argentine ants are. And on top of how boring they are, they are also super hard to keep...so combine the two...

What defines interesting behavior in an ant to you?

No, they don't. Native to SA so cold doesnt make them go away, although they may slow down activity as a result of a slower metabolism
Kill them all!!!!!!! Get something better.
Which species should I get? And where can I get it?
probably Camponotus in the mountains, they will fly in spring.
Ex igne et in infernum.
