I am getting my cousin into the hobby and was wondering if anyone had any low maintinance species for trade or for cheap. I am willing to do pick ups or shippings.

I would actually recommend Veromessor andrei. I don't even feed mine anything except seeds. The only times I have to open their formicarium is when I change their tube or to help a worker that somehow gets stuck under a tube. They are fast growing but not extremely fast making them very good.

don't they need protein as well?
honestly i wouldn't go with fire ants, if they sting ur cousin it might put them off of the hobby
but yeah i would also say tetramorium are really easy. they were my first ant species
I have some high elevation camponotus vicinus that require hibernation. Very low maintinance for the next 4 months.

Seeds contain a lot of protein; but yes, supplements of insect food is very beneficial.
I have decent size colony for C. Querciola for sale. I can deliever it to u if u reside in LA. around 50 workers and no need hibernation. $150 if u buy andpick up $170 if i deliver it to u in LA
Since it's established colony it will be fine and fun to watch

this sp needs hibernation, 50 workers isn't a established colony.

I just want a small colony and that is way above my budget. Anyways I am possibly getting a colony.

not according to Nurbs I got this colony from Nurbs and he caught them in lower elevation which does not required hibernation.

is that true, lower elevation camponotus don't need hibernation??

I believe it's depending on location you caught them. Like C. Vicinus some of them require hibernation and some don't. U do see little difference between lower elevation caught vs higher elevation caught ants as well.

Quericola hibernate if they originated from a place that gets cold enough, so yes. You can't expect Camponotus pennsylvanicus from NY to behave the same was as C. pennsylvanicus from texas. Location matters.
This is true, I have some high elevation Camponotus vicinus that need hibernation, but the lower elevation variety DO NOT need hibernation. Of course the location matters depending on when ants hibernate. Lets not hijack the thread though.
