So, I have some pretty severe gender dysphoria issues, I say this to present my bona fides as it were. Honestly, when I present contrary to my biological sex, I find it offensive when people are like "what _are_ you?" even if they are trying to be polite. I never go for androgyny, I present as either male or female.
When staring at a list of "genders" (in quotations to notate a category, not to dismiss any potential inclusions to the category) it actually fills me with dread. No longer am I selecting how I present, now I'm having to put a label on something. And I feel like no matter what I choose I'm going to pick the wrong one. On a forum, gender is just listed as short hand to communicate your pronouns, but in many ways it is irrelevant. Now, I'm a netbaby technomancer, so I do honestly see people online more as their avatar and screen name. @Kaelwizard is a moth mage. @Swirlysnowflake, you're an ant on a leaf, and we all love ants here. Your gender isn't important to me, its our shared love of a hobby that matters. I hope nobody cares about my gender here either.
I'd rather see the "gender" field eliminated than filled with more and more options, because really our gender is the least interesting thing about us.
Inclusion is about welcoming others and ignoring out differences. Highlighting them, I think, only serves to divide.
