Is it okay to keep Myrmecocystus Mexicanus in a tubs n tubes setup? My colony seems to be doing fine but, just wanted to check.


Currently: Considering moving to Australia
Reason: Myrmecia

They should have substrate in their tube. If they have that they should be fine.

Eventually they will need to be moved into a larger, vertical nest so their repletes can hang on the ceiling. Depending on their size, that could be pretty soon.

Thanks I made sure they have substrate in there tube so and they are nearing about 30 workers so I will move them into my newly made diy Myrmecocystus setup.

I would buy a THA Mini Hearth for them once they get 30 ish workers. The repletes need to hand from the roof. If they are in a tubs and tubes the queen will replete.

just to add on to this, a queen becoming a replete is very unhealthy for her and greatly inhibits her egg production.

It would probably look cool but manitobant has a point, with such a big bum she couldn't curl it up and lay eggs and when she does if she's on a hard surface with sand pebbles basically she could explode.

I would get a vertical setup as suggested by many here. Any tar heel ants nest would work (except fallen fortress or labyrinth)
