Oh lol. My wasps have never shown much inclination to sting me, and have never tried, but then again they are just single queens with no colony to defend yet.

My friends and I may or may not have been throwing rocks at them. I would never do something like this now, this was a few years ago.

When I got stung it hurt like hell, but I was 7 I want to say?  I saw the purple blob flying so me being the little curious gremlin I was, when and touched it.  Not my proudest moment.

I feel bad when I think back to all the times I have stepped on wasps for literally no reason whatsoever lol

Does anyone know approximately how long it takes for queens to start nest building? My guess is a few weeks but I don’t have any experience with that so I’m not sure.

Update! No sign of nest building :(

I put them together and they did this weird fight by pushing the legs against the others legs while standing on their hind legs. It’s hard to explain but they did that for about 15 minutes (I was ready to separate them if it looked like it was getting dangerous) and then they stopped. About 5 minutes later they approached each other again and one regurgitated honey or something and fed the other. Maybe it was a fight for dominance? I’m not sure.

Anyways, that was yesterday and they’ve been peaceful since then. I’m keeping an eye on them though to make sure they don’t start attacking each other.

Nothing new with the P. dominula queens, sadly. They just sit around all day drinking nectar. I wonder if I keep catching bad queens, or if my setup isn’t right? Anyways, do you think I should release them right where I found them, or keep them for longer?

This journal is resurfacing because I found a smallish Polistes nest at my school. It’s in a corridor and obviously a safety hazard so when the school finds it they’ll definitely kill it. I might be able to go and try to take the nest later today or tomorrow and relocate it in my yard.

After further consideration, my tiny backyard which is connected to two easily upset neighbors is probably not the best place to keep a free-ranged colony of wasps.

I’ve been looking at the nest throughout the day. There seem to be three wasps on it. I’m going later today to get it down lol

A flaw in my plan! The rim of the net is too wide to fit between the nest and the roof, if that makes sense. I’m going to make a tiny net with jewelry wire and try.

This is where the nest is:

The picture is sideways, the nest is sticking out horizontally, not hanging downward

I completely forgot to update this. The school took down the wasp nest before I could. However, I moved and found 2 small abandoned wasp nests on the house, so hopefully I can catch some queens in spring and give them the nests.
