We do have Pogonomyrmex and the whole array of eastern species in the same state, though. That's unique.

We do have Pogonomyrmex and the whole array of eastern species in the same state, though. That's unique.

 

if i could move to the black hills, i would. they have awesome species there. i am surprised that we don't have a dealer there. i would for sure buy ants from them.

Personally I’ve released 2 T. immigrans colonies in my yard, but where I live they’ve been here for years and get stomped on by the common, large species we have like P. occidentalis.

Seriously, I've seen Pogonomyrmex raid and destroy tetras...  I rarely see a tetra colony anywhere near Pogonomyrmex.  They are the reigning champs here.

The winters here never really dip below 30...  The average is like 45 for daytime. You'll see Camponotus americanus workers all over the place in the daytime, tryna find some food for the adults before it gets cold in the evening. Then the cycle repeats for the entire winter until they stay out and the brood starts developing again in February.

October can be anywhere from the 60s to the 30s.

 

November is usually between the 50s and 30s, sometimes 20s, it's not uncommon to get snow on Thanksgiving.

 

December is all 30s and 20s, however we barely get any snow usually, making Christmas depressing.

 

January is when it gets bitter cold, I'm talking in the teens and below ten, and occasionally below 0. There's usually about a week or so in January or February where the temp is below 0 consistently, sometimes going below -20.

 

February is still bitter cold, yet it's not as bad as January.

 

March is miserable. It warms up a bit, melting some snow, yet sometimes it still snows again, and gets cold.

 

April is better, yet still unpredictable. It's either rainy and 60s or still snowing.

 

May is when Spring is consistent, and temps climb consistently into the 60s and possibly 70s.

 

June is 70s and 80s, and is almost always sunny and miserably humid. This is when thunderstorms (and tornadoes) start rolling in.

 

July is the hottest month, always in the 80s and 90s, and most always sunny and still terribly humid.

 

August is also hot and sunny, yet temps prefer to stay more in the 80s, yet 90s aren't uncommon This is the most dry month of the year, usually.

 

September is when things start to cool down again, getting into the 60s and 70s. Everything seems to hang in the balance until October comes around again, and summer dropped the ball.

Ha! I'm in a bit of a cold snap rn (50s), but the 60s and 70s are coming back this week. That should continue on for the most of November, into December when it starts to go down into the mid 30s and 40s. January is half and half. Some weeks its cold, with lows of 29 and highs of 34, but others jump into the 70s. Early-mid February is when the flowers start to blossom, the trees start to get their leaves back, and the first flights start. By this time it's hitting the 70s fairly consistently again. March comes and everything jumps back to life. More ants start flying, the temps are now hitting the 80s and things are going good. April comes 'bout and the Camponotus start having their main flights during the hottest evenings (usually in the high 80s/low 90s.) and the anting year is nearly at its peak. The other main flights happen in June, July and August, again on the hottest of evenings are when the Solenopsis, Pheidole and Colobopsis fly. Around this time is when Camponotus have their very last flights, and start producing alates for next year.
