Well everything's gotta come to a peak at some point, since as it stands the chances of me being able to support a mature Atta colony (~3 million workers) is slim. Still, until they get to the point where I can no longer keep up with their appetite, I'll keep letting them grow like crazy.

Seeing how the fungi has the nutritional capabilities to provide enough energy to the workers and enough protein for larvae, it makes me wonder whether or not it could be used for human consumption. Is it edible for humans, if so what would the nutritional value of it be? Could this be a viable part of someone’s diet? And most importantly, what does it taste like?

Seeing how the fungi has the nutritional capabilities to provide enough energy to the workers and enough protein for larvae, it makes me wonder whether or not it could be used for human consumption. Is it edible for humans, if so what would the nutritional value of it be? Could this be a viable part of someone’s diet? And most importantly, what does it taste like?

Atta fungus kinda just tastes like water. Heard from a friend.

Also, it's probably not a good idea to consume large amounts of it since it would be hard to only pick out pieces that are 100% fungus. I can't imagine that eating pieces of fungus with not-yet digested plants buried in it would be very good for you.

I wonder if it has the texture of a marshmallow or if it just kind of melts in your mouth. Or does it eat you after you eat it?

 

On second thought if looks kind of crunchy. Fungus chips, anyone?

Decided to get some nice pics of the whole setup today. Nothing too terribly special has happened, just the continued growth of the colony at a pretty normal rate.
 

 

 

I also took what might just be my favorite picture ever. I pulled out one soldier and one small worker from the colony (not the smallest there was, but still a super small one) and got a nice picture showing the size disparity. It still blows my mind.
