So my highlights of the year were:
I GOT HONEYPOTSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually did not kill my Pheidole
And raise a Camponotus vicinus colony
i wish i had honeypot ants.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. -Proverbs 6: 6-8

Oof, sorry. I wish they were present in all the U.S.

This year I found out you can catch a queen ant and raise a colony. I'd had no idea before, despite loving ants all my life and even having a colony living wild under a rubber mat on the bow of my boat. As a kid the kitchen would fill up with flying ants once a year and we just never knew why.
Now I have 26 colonies (way too many!) and a whole new outlook on the world.
Ants have had millions of years to solve a lot of the problems we face as human societies. I love their democracy in decision making. The way they share everything - no one goes hungry if there is food. No one is lonely. Everything they do is for the colony and next generation. Then their solutions to dealing with males (strictly for genetic diversity) and teenagers (zipped up in cocoons til they grow up) is brutal but utilitarian. I also love how they work so hard towards the nuptial flight festival.
