I found a new Acanthomyops colony in the forest today, and I noticed variation in the workers, so I decided to take samples of both variants. I put them under the microscope, and it appears I have found a dual-species colony. I've heard that this happens somewhat often in Acanthomyops, and that it was usually not noticeable until flights. With a rough ID, I think they are Lasius claviger and Lasius subglaber

The cf. subglaber

The cf. claviger

Both

Wow, that subglaber worker is extremely pale if it isn't a callow.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Yep. That’s how they look.
