Hey y'all,

 

I recently moved down to the Southeastern US and was curious what anting is like on a more abstract scale around here.  There's a lot of overlap with Indiana, but lots of important differences. I'm not really familiar with how the seasons are, for instance. Obviously, conditions are so variable that it's difficult to get specific info on anything.  

 

Still, what are you catching when? As we transition into Fall, what species do you keep an eye out for?  Any rough estimates for nuptial flight "schedules?"

I’m at the northernmost point of what would be considered south-east. Where are you for reference? Here in VA, we’re going to start cooling down big time, so all I expect to find are lots and lots of parasitic Lasius. They can fly all the way into December!

I’m in the Deep South personally, Northeastern Mississippi to be more precise. Most likely I won’t be keeping anything for a while, but I will be keeping an eye out for what I can find.

Invicta, invicta and more invicta. They literally fly all year in huge numbers. Keep a few and kill the rest, as they're dirt common.

Funny thing, actually. I was thinking about trying to catch an invicta flight and catching as many alarms as possible. Was gonna freeze them and maybe eat them.

Id honestly keep like one or 2 just for the hell of it. Its still a fun ant and a shame its so invasive. You can find hundreds of queens in a single day so it won't hurt.

On a more serious note, I can’t keep anything right now. No colonies.

I’m still anting and looking for insects, but I’m not trying to captive-rear anything. A few workers for identification is about all I’m collecting.
