She has eggs!!! I didn't notice, as they are underneath her, on the cotton. Hopefully she will get workers before hibernation.

My L. neoniger  duos have eggs as well.

Yeah. The flight happened a few nights ago at 6 pm while I was fishing on the Cumberland river. There were thousands of queens. I ended up getting 14 that dropped their wings.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Yeah, I was pretty bummed. It actually happened over a week ago, but forgot to update. Hopefully I can find another one next year.

Caught two more queens at thr blacklight last night! I am hoping beyond hope they are fertile, as they have not yet dropped their wings. Now they better not just die this time!

Ugh, so jelly. They are very beautiful, good work! I am hoping my mystery lasius makes Golden babies too.

The dealate laid an egg! It is a slightly yellowish color, and curved, looking like a larva, but she did not have an egg yesterday, so there is no way it is a larva. I think their eggs just look like this, as the ones from last year were identical.

 

The alates have yet to do anything.

She laid 2 more eggs!

 

One alate laid a single egg, and the other, 2.

 

Hopefully they lay more, and don't die. I might get some pictures later today.

So one alate died in hibernation. I took out the dealate, and today she started looking rather plump, and, a couple hours later, what do you know, she pooped out an egg.

 

It actually looks like a normal Lasius egg, so IDK what those earlier eggs were. I really hope she is successful, I've wanted this species for such a long time. I will take the remaining alate out today.

As you can she, she is doing fairly well. She is still physogastric, so I imagine that she will hopefully lay more eggs. The alate is acting weird, and will probably die.

She got a worker a little while ago!

I'm very happy that is is indeed brevicornis and not a sitiens in disguise. Sadly, the test tube they are in has these annoying, minor deformations in the glass that make taking good pictures almost impossible, much to my dismay. They have another pupa, and a small pile of eggs. Everything in these species seems to develop at a snails pace, but I suppose it will be nice to have a colony where exponential growth and the taking up of space is not a worry. I will continue to try to take some photos, maybe I will get lucky eventually. When/if I do, I will post the photo(s) here.
