Update 8-8-2020

This will be one of my unique journals in that it will be detailing my experiments in which I combine T. curvispinosus and T. ambiguus together during founding. I only have one test tube with one of each species in it, but I plan to get more next year if this colony turns out.

Temnothorax curvispinosus/ambiguus (1 of each queen):

I have mentioned this colony a while back in my collective journal when I had only just got them. Today, they have four large larvae that seem ready to pupate, as well as some smaller brood items. Both queens are very tolerant of each other so far, and I have fed them honey recently to ensure that they don't fight over a potential lack of resources. It's strange to see two different species founding so readily together, although Temnothorax seems like the type of genus that would do such a thing.

I already have mentioned this on your collective journal but I will say it again: I think this experiment is really cool, and I hope they make a large colony! It would be awesome to see two species working alongside each other as a single colony.

I also never realized how different these two species looked.

I had a similar thing occur on my Journal. The smaller queen was killed.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I remember reading that journal, and I’ve kept that in my mind ever since. Did you ever figure out if the smaller queen was a different species?

They still have a few large larvae, but no pupae yet. Both queens are still getting along!

Great! Hopefully when they get workers they will still be fine with each other.
