Update 45: Bonsai Ant Keeping (August 14 2022)

From 20.000+ workers down to 30, and now back at 300+

The colony is developing nicely, loads of larvae cover the floor of the nest

They may hit the 1000 worker mark again when hibernation comes

I am going to tag this page on my "important" section for reference on my own growing lasius colony! Amazing work here!

I'd suggest that if you eventually choose to downsize again, save some of the brood (and a few workers, of course) to give away, either to parasitic queens, or to other ant keepers! Very useful for a lot of things.

Currently raising:

Myrmica rubra (1 queen +  ~5 workers)

Lasius niger (single queen + ~90+ workers)

Lasius neoniger (3 single queen + brood)

Formica spp. (Queen [likely parasitic, needs brood])

Formica pacifica (Queen)

Also keeping a friend's tetramorium immigrans for the foreseeable future. Thanks CoffeBlock!
