I’m intending on black lighting tonight, but I can’t find any information online about which ants in the west (specifically Colorado) have their nuptial flights this time of year. Is there any specific species you all know of that I should look out for? Is it worth the time blacklighting at all this time of year? I appreciate any information you guys could give me.

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

Find what species would be in your area then look at this link:

It would probably be best if temps were above 70F at night for decent results.

Thank you, it looks like I have a shot at a few different species. The temp where I live is just around 70 degrees tonight, so I’ll see what happens.

The nights after a good rain are usually great as are hot, humid nights with light winds. June was more active for me here in VA, can’t say if CO is similar. It’s still worth trying.

The conditions were ideal, with rain a few hours before hand, but only a spider showed up. I think I may need a brighter black light, you can barely see my current one even in total darkness.
