So I’m selling Pogonomyrmex occidentalis queens, which can be shipped across state borders without a permit. (https://www.formicul...op/#entry157404)

What’s the best way to ship ants? All of them are in test tube setups.

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

Extra padding, with no empty space for the tube to move around, insulation to keep the right temperature in, a heat pack (releasing a bit of heat at a time, not like HOT HOT, but healthy for the ants) And of course with the proper address and with arrival time as soon as possible. Make sure the ants have what they need to survive, water, food, etc.

Keeps:

1:Pogonomymex occidentalis

4: Tetramorium immigrans

2 Reticulitermes flavipes

Full test tube setups are probably not a great idea too. Maybe halfway with the water.

If the package will be air-mailed DO NOT send them in a test tube with water. The air pressure changes can cause the tube to flood. I would just dampen a cotton ball at the back of the tube.

Full tubes are fine. Over the last year I've shipped out probably over 30 orders and none have had any complications during shipment.

I’m thinking of a box with the test tube, filled with packing peanuts/bubble wrap and one of those hand heating packets. Would that do the job?

If you ship down here, it’ll be 100 degrees on the mail truck. I don’t think you need a heat pack.

Most people I know who ship inverts in the summer (e.g. isopods) actually use cool packs!

Yeah if it’s going to be warm outside use a cool pack. Always pay attention to the weather when the ants are going to be shipped.

Remember state law supercedes federal law. Many states have their own restrictions or require their own permits for legal sale. Off the top of my head I know both Florida and California require additional permits to ship P occidentalis into the state.

And I don't believe you can ship to Alaska or Hawaii either? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the changes to the legal restrictions concerning P. occidentalis only apply to the lower 48 states.

All of that is true. We don’t have any orders from Florida and we’re linking the permit to all California buyers.

Sorry to kinda necro a thread, but I'm wondering this in case I need to ship some of my extra queens.

What sort of packaging works best? Does there need to be any sort of identification on the package? (Live animals, etc). I know when I've shipped stuff in the past, you often have to say what it is (toys, clothes, etc) though maybe that was just for international...

I of course am only considering shipping within my state.
