I'm going to be starting a journal for this species. They currently have around 50-60 workers and the queen was caught in 2019. This species is relatively large compared to other Camponotus in the United States.

 

I'm currently keeping them in a boxbox container with a hydrostone base and sand surface. I've also been feeding them nearly every day with pieces of roaches, some fruit flies and hikari freeze-dried bloodworms. I also have a byFormica 1ml feeder that is filled with perky pet hummingbird nectar for them to drink.

 

For the most part, they seem to be very calm and do not forage even as much as my C. fragilis colonies of the same size. This might also just be because they have a pretty small brood pile right now. However, when I was moving them into their current setup, a worker that got on my finger tried to bite me multiple times. This was the first time I've had Camponotus workers from any of my colonies try to actively attack me.

I've heard they are a mountainous species, not one you'd usually find on an anting trip unless looking specifically for them.

Update 8/1/20

 

Sometimes I see the workers crawling over the mesh, but I'm not sure if they're actually hungry or just want to move around a little. They're still very cowardly and don't eat very much, considering how they have a decent sized brood pile. I wonder if they'll stay like this for the rest of the year or if they'll become more active. It's only 3 months until hibernation now. I'm not too worried though, since it's not like they're dying or anything.

I had to go somewhere for a while so Ms. JenC helped me take care of my ca02. They haven't really increased in worker count since the last update, and I put them through a period without heat, but they have a lot of larvae right now. JenC's a really nice person I'm so grateful she was able to help me out.

 

I'm moving them into a new nest today. It's the same nest I've been using for my novomessor: plus sized tub with plus sized tubes. I also made some semi-bamboo tubes. They haven't settled completely yet, so I was able to get some decent pics of them
