Hey guys! I have been working on a new formicarium for queens and I think the ants are doing well! What do y’all think about them?

Really like the stand displays—very creative. Same question as FSTP, how does hydration work?

I take a pipette and squirt the water on top between the glass and grout and it diffuses to the sand and hydrates. It works very good actually!

Is that museum glass?

It’s actually not. It’s actually glass from dollar tree frames haha

These are the very first ones I made so can you all think of a better hrydration method or any improvements on water retention as it tends to dry out pretty quick

haha that is where I've got my glass as well. It cuts easy and is fairly clear, for cheap glass.

Also you may find you're needing to hydrate very often using that method. As my first iteration of founding formicaria were quite similar. I used a similar method for hydrating and quickly got annoyed with how often I needed to add water. In Version 1.1 you might want to add a water reservoir.

Does water need to stay in it all the time or just a little at a time?

Could you insert a nestmate in the holes in the back? That would be sufficient for Camponotus.
"The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer." Prov. 30:25
Keep ordinary ants in extraordinary ways.

Yes, two holes would be preferable. Can't have too many holes, as a third could be used to attach another nest, a fourth could be used to attach a sugar test tube, and so on. But there should be at least two.

"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version

Keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans

Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea

Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra

Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Pheidole bicarinata

Myrmica sp.

Lasius neoniger, brevicornis

So just to be clear, the nest needs to stay moist 24/7?

Like a water tower in THA nests or a large hole where a water tube could be attached and replaced as needed.

yes it needs to stay moist, aka humid 24/7. IMO nestmates are useless pieces of junk. You need to remove them to fill them allowing ants to escape.

Mine had some kind of build up at the end, so I didn't have to take mine out to refill it.

So in a failure mode it becomes useable? That's not how good product design works, lol.
