What is the cheapest but also quality black light trap I can buy? I'm thinking about getting one of the 1/2 acre Dynatraps on eBay for $80, but I would like to buy something more suited to ants.

I tried doing something like that but the setup wasn't waterproof.

why does it need to be water proof? are you black lighting in the rain or something ?

A blacklight should definitely not be left on in the rain. On a deeper level, they should not be left on unattended for long periods of time. Light pollution from humans is very disruptive to nocturnal flying insects and migratory birds. I personally only blacklight for an hour or so while I can actively monitor, then I turn it off.

There are a lot of intermittent showers where I live, it would be a pain constantly bring back my setup inside and then bring it out again just because it rained.

As far as I am concerned the biggest reason to not leave your light unattended for extended periods is the danger of theft.

The amount of light dispersed would be greatly decreased. Also, the power cord would also be exposed to the elements.
