Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I find the majors super creepy.
I'm hoping somehow there might be another species fitting that description?

There is a species a few of us have kept that we suspect is C. ocreatus (even though it didn't key out to that for me), and it grows pretty slow in my experience. I don't think C. semitestaceus is a desert species. I've found them in desert scrub areas near mountains, but not way out in the desert. Plus, every C. semitestaceus colony I have had grew really fast.
What is your definition of slow growing?
Idk. Just slower than something like c. fragilis.

I would say just wait till next year and find some of the coastal vicinus near you.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
Vicinus grow around the same speed or faster than fragilis I think.
