Monsoon season has begun in the desert southwest US!

 

There's already huge thunderstorms blowing through some of the desert cities. Soon there should be ants galore out there again.

With all the luck you've been having the past few months I thought it'd already started!

Haha nah, I haven't had any luck with desert ants, except for the Pogonomyrmex californicus we found after a freak thunderstorm blew through one desert city. As a matter of fact, we couldn't even find any ants at all in the desert; they don't seem to come out until the monsoon season starts. Mostly what we were finding was all the high elevation Camponotus that fly in very early spring. We haven't found much of anything else for the last month and a half. Tomorrow we'll be heading out to the desert where a pretty big storm blew through earlier today in hopes to find something. On the way back we will pass through the mountains since it might be raining up there a bit tomorrow.

Please keep us updated on any flights, I am interested in various desert species. I am hoping to catch a few flights still this year,

especially Acromyrmex versicolor.

We just got back from the desert yesterday and Pogonomyrmex rugosus were flying while we were there. I will have more posts about this later. It rained in a few other locations out there yesterday and so they should be flying today in those spots.

Where exactly "in the desert"?

Oh sorry, basically a little north of Phelan, CA, right near the entrance to the El Mirage Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area.

 

 

 

Just look for lots of these.
