I found this lady in the pool. Using a dichotomous key for workers, not queens, I think I was able to narrow her down to Tetramorium (but I’m a newb, so no telling if I’m right!)

1. Location (on a map) of collection: Jacksonville FL
2. Date of collection: June 8, 2020
3. Habitat of collection: urban
4. Length (from head to gaster): 7mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: golden brown with dark gaster
6. Distinguishing characteristics: 12 antennal segments, petioles and post-petiole, at least one epinotal spine, no spurs on distal tibia of middle or hind leg, hairy, possible clypeus ridge
7. Distinguishing behavior: big clump of eggs
8. Nest description:
9. Nuptial flight time and date: found alate in June 8 with many other skates in the pool

Definitely Pheidole. Florida doesn't have any Tetramorium queens that are large and claustral like this, all of ours are very small, slender, and worker-like.

I think most people around here who have pools keep them closed when they’re not using them. A shame....... their loss.

It’s a community pool...if only everyone in the community appreciated ants as much!
