Test tube feeding is the worst!
The other day I was feeding a brand new Crematogaster ashmeadi colony in a tube that had just two nanitics. I accidentally knocked one out, 33% of the colony! Thank God I was able to gather up the tiny thing and get her back in the tube. I gave them an outworld the very next day.

Huh. I don't have issues with most of the smaller species until they get like 30 workers. Unless they are P. navigans.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I actually find outworlds with small colonies a hassle, as the workers are so timid, and you never even know if they even eat what you give them, as they rarely eat when you're around.

These guys just got their sixth worker, and the queen laid a bunch more eggs. They all reside by the entrance of the tube, where a worker always sits. Once I get my foraging Area, I plan to move them into a Discus/Mini Hearth XL. What do you guys think, MHXL (Mini Hearth XL) or a Discus?

Update July 16, 2020

Ok so, I had a mini crisis on trying to move the queen into a Mini Hearth (you can read about it here: https://www.formicul...us/#entry155150) but now she is in there. I have all the lights off and I am keeping the room they are housed in dark to not stress them out. After they (hopefully) move in I will get photos.

So, update. Guess what, the entire time I usually would be updating, these guys have been doing a internal tug of war. They kept moving in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out and- uh, back to what I was saying. I eventually stepped in and added a Flukers heating pad to the bottom of the Mini Hearth XL. They then moved on in nicely, I attached a side outworld, and they actively forage in it, unlike what others have said (I’m looking at you JenC, :) ). Here are some photos, the queen likes to sit in the back while the brood and most of the workers (like 4-3 out of the 6) sit in the front, the rest stay with the queen or forage. Here are some photos, excuse the thermometer card I used to block light from coming in the nest, I am finding some black paper to cut out and use instead.

Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii

Update July 30th, 2020

 

CV just got their 7th worker. They have been taking in a lot of fruit flies and they have larvae and I spotted the queen laying a couple eggs. So hopefully we will get more workers soon

Sorry this journal has been so inactive, but they have been doing nothing worth updating until now. They just had a new little batch of eggs and the one larvae became a pupae. They also are now eating bloodworms.

Also if anybody wants a photo dump of these girls just ask in replies.

Not when your ants freak out or may eat their eggs when you turn on the lights or something. But otherwise no lol.
