Had a special tarheel ant nest made for small ants. Was sure it would be ok because it was "tarheel". Well anyway they got into the water well. Lost a very nice colony.

Same thing happened to me once. The mesh broke and the ants fell into the reservoir and drowned.

My Lasius aphidicola with only a queen and host workers are in an Inception Chamber. They found a way into the water tower and a lot of them drowned......... I even see some crawling in and out of the tube where the syringe is inserted.

Well tell mr tarheel that!  And ants dakota I'm glad you mention your experience because when i brought it to mr tarheels attention he said it never has happened before like it was my fault. I was so mad. i  actually lost 2 colonies in his formicariums. 2 large colonies of small ants. They found a way into the water well through the

hole that you use to fill it with water which to me means it was not sealed correctly.

I know you had a nest custom made for small ants, but I lost other reasons besides that THA are made for bigger and medium ants.

Not to be rude but: ANTDrew just said they are made for big ants and medium sized ants, not small ants (i.g.). But, YOU MAY take the risk of putting them in here. Also, Mack is a good guy and he said that had never happened before. As somebody who has a big colony of small ants (Pheidole Californica) who has put them in a Mini Hearth, and the person I bought even had them in one too. I think it’s just bad luck, please don’t blame TarHeel for what the ants may have done. Also, many people have kept small ants, such as Tetramorium, Monomorium, Pheidole, etc in TarHeel Formicaria if you look into the site. Personally, I NEVER have had, or seen on the forum any ants drown due to TarHeel products. This may have been a anomaly, or something could have broke in delivery as that can happen, and you may have not noticed it, but the ants did.

All I’m saying is: please think of the other reasons before blaming TarHeel, they have one of the best reputations and products in the Ant Keeping Community, and I doubt they would have faulty workmanship. There have only been a few rare cases where TarHeel products have killed colonies, usually it was caused by something else, rather then their workmanship.

Again, I do not intend to be rude by this, but I just want to put my input.

As i already said Tarheel makes custom formicariums and he said these were for small/tiny ants. And i never said he was a bad guy. Also just because it never happened to you does not make it not possible. Ok thanks for your input and sticking up for Tarheel.

Tarheel ants is brand of ant products and supplies. You can find them by google Tarheel ants. They sell formicariums, food, tubing, tweezers, and pretty much anything else you could need.

Also, necropost :D

I think I am the biggest killer of my ants. And test tube problems.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

for me, it was water or not feeding them enough. i have solved that now, though.

For some reason M. mexicanus just die for me.

I have 2 living queens, 1 living dud, and all the rest seem to just keel over dead for no apparent reason. Like... they have water. They have Sunburst. They have heat. I feed them.

So there's just some kind of random "X ant species will die for you" aura or something

They found a way into the water tower (still not sure how) and drowned. Luckily the queen didn't fall in.

Placing the lid back on the outworld when the alcohol + baby powder barrier isn't dry yet. The whole colony got contact drunk. They weren't moving for 10-15 minutes. They would've died had i kept the lid on. Always let your barrier dry before you put the lid back on.

Same. My Formica subsericea lost 4 out of 6 workers from this.

I think yours were just defective. Some people have kept Solenopsis molesta and even smaller ants in THA nests with no problems.
