Hey,

So I have a Crematogaster queen with around 12 pupae however, she is not eclosing the workers. The first two of them have almost completely browned but she has not done anything with them.

I have attached a photo.

IMG 3165

She has been kept in somewhat quiet conditions.

I know their is probably not much to do but wait and see what happens.

But has anyone encountered this sort of problem or know any potential solutions, etc,?

Thanks so much!

Those brown ones should eclose within days. The only factor I could think of is temperature.

Ah ok. So it's normal for Crematogaster pupae to be that dark before eclosing? They are constantly kept at 70-80 degrees. So I don't think its temperature. I just wasn't sure if this looks like something out of the ordinary.

That's exactly what they should be looking like. Congrats, my friend.

They are hands down the best, but start planning your containment strategy!

Alright so one of the workers eclosed! Yay. But she appears to be just sitting their almost curled up. I'll see how she's doing in the morning. Nothing I can do if anything is wrong so I'll see.

It takes some time for them to harden up. Don’t sweat it.

Same thing with my Aphenogaster Rudis. I thought the pupae had a deformity or died somehow, and the worker's exoskeleton would harden wrong, but the pupae unraveled  its legs and Started moving. For crematogaster, my newly enclosed workers are a lot lighter. Weird.

My best piece of advice at this point is to get your Cremas an outworld ASAP with constant access to a nectar feeder and plentiful insect protein. You really can’t feed these too much. They don’t store much food in their stomachs.

Update? How are the Cremas?

They're doing really well! They are up to 9 workers and expecting a ton more workers in a few days. I had a slight die off of a few workers when i tried placing them in an outworld, but since I move them to a different outworld, I've had absolutely not issues. i'll post pictures some time today! My as well make this thread into a journal :D
