Well, I'll just shamelessly put this here. Hopefully its okay, its not like I'm a spambot as most of you know me. So...yeah xD

One of my friends suggested I try this and it helped him get back to Youtubing videos and helped him with his college work. Guess it doesn't hurt.

For a long time I've been unable to really do good quality youtube videos. Rendering is slow and crashes. So pretty much can't do Youtube on my PC. And when trying to write my book and having things crash, is...well...doesn't make writing fun. Having to re-do an hour of work is very...well pretty much stops me writing. And saving every 10 minutes or whatever amount of time, loses my concentration on writing.

I can't even run vanilla Skyrim, can't do videos of Rome 2 or even play barely any modern game. Can't do nature videos as rendering is slow as heck. Reinstalling with a new hard drive does no good, because my power supply is probably bad along with whatever else. My computter is 5+ years old, and its not even high end parts...and I can't afford a new PC. I'm on a government disability, and if I got a job I'd lose my disability and all my health benefits. But, my income is SUPER low, and really mostly worth it just for the health benefits (and that is pretty limited as it is, so its mostly for a medication really).

Feel free to share this if you want (or not). Up to you. Or help out if you can or whatever...either way. Thanks everyone smile.png

Like I said, hope its okay here. Its pretty shameful and I kind of feel bad doing this to be honest. But I can't even barely use my PC as it is sad.png And can't even closely afford a new one. Like I said, even if all you do is share to facebook or whatever, it still helps.

Too bad you didn't post this 4 months ago.  I donated my old computer away, you would have only had to pay for shipping.  It was 7 years old and had no problems running most new games or videos - but it couldn't handle a special software I use for work.

Maybe someone here has an older computer that works well?

What kinds of stuff do you do on the computer?

I find hidden viruses or cookies can really slow down a computer - try downloading Malwarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/10/ They have a free version (use the free one, not the trial one - don't let it upgrade to the trial as it will only go for a month then).  I like this so much that I bought the actual license.

It won't solve all problems, but it may help.

Well about viruses. I tried reinstalling my PC and put in a brand new hard drive, but it still crashes. I did combofix, malwarebytes and all kinds of stuff and it still happens on a brand new fresh PC install. I kind of do higher end stuff with mine though, so it really makes my PC chug. Probably wears down my weaker hardware. I do youtube videos for gaming, but most modern games are too laggy on my PC. Like witcher 3 (I have a development version) and modded skyrim run at 15-30 FPS. Or GTA 5 runs at 20-30 FPS as well and is really laggy, so can't even play that. But I also use it for lighter stuff like writing my book and I try rendering gaming videos and nature videos in my video editing program but it just crashes my GPU.

What actually happens is when I'm trying to record high end games (fraps), its so laggy my GPU ends up dying...either blue screen, or drivers crash and I get severe graphics issues. Either that or my power supply is bad or both.

I have a GTX 660 2gb (but it isn't strong enough for youtube videos for modern games, and its probably gone bad)

600 wat power supply (but its a low end one, so bad quality even though high wattage)

windows 7 64bit

8 gig DDR 3 ram (its 5+ years old now)

i 5 660 CPU (this is a pretty terrible one and worst hardware I have. Its super slow and bottlenecks all my other hardware)

I did a stress test, and my GPU died when it was under heavy load...causing all kinds of errors on my PC (graphical errors that is).

As PC building is my hobby, I can tell you that your spec is not too bad. 8gb of RAM is more than enough to get by and your CPU is good enough. Your GPU is, however, a junk as you put it.

HDD also matters for speed.

Well, right now my GPU is dying on me or power supply or both. So whenever its rendering videos in my video program, the drivers crash, get artifacts and then I lose the work I put into making the video. Dunno if that be the GPU, but when I'm doing anything intensive the same thing happens no matter what it is. While my power supply has a lot of watz like I said, it is kind of a low quality one.

CPU is okay I guess like dean said (it isn't quite supported by Witcher 3 though, which I was supposed to do promotional videos for but can't. Witcher 3 takes a more modern CPU), and I have a lot of ram. Ram itself is super cheap these days.

My HDD as well, its just a regular hard drive. I've never had an SSD one. Personally never noticed an issue with it though, but then again, never had an SSD to compare :P

Plus when I'm writing, if windows decides to update or video/music is playing in the background (because I like sound while I'm writing)...it freezes up word and drivers crash again with artifacts. And then I lose all my effort in however much time I did writing. And I don't like saving every 10-15 minutes as that kind of breaks my writing concentration. Sometimes drivers crash randomly even if all that is up is Word, and I again lose my writing progress. So I pretty much haven't written for a while cause its too annoying.

I've had SSDs since... they came out, I think. I can't live without those. I'd rather buy a cheaper CPU if I can route the extra fund for a better SSD.

Booting windows in 7 seconds and start using it right away is always good experience to have.

While your overall spec is not too bad except for the GPU, yes, your entire rig is due a major upgrade which, I am afraid, is going to cost pretty penny. But it shouldn't be doing what you are describing. You may want to format your HDD clean and reinstall everything. It generally solves all software conflicts/issues and malware/whatnot.

I actually have reinstalled. Twice. Once on my old hard drive, and same thing was happening...but then my hard drive died. And then my new hard drive, brand new install and everything...same thing happens.

It could be my power supply is bad, and damaging my other hardware. Which would explain why my old hard drive died about same time I was having these symptoms on my PC. Or its a coincidence. But I can't afford anything right now lol. And if anything to skimp out on, on a PC...its definitely not the power supply :P

Gtx 660 should be able to handle youtube which is basically adobe flash. Since you did say you reinstalled, twice, I'd say you have a hardware issue(s). Your PC spec is more than adequate for daily usage.

I don't get it. That i5 with 8 gigs of ram should blow through anything you throw at it. Even your video card is decent I think but a new one wouldn't hurt. Something else is wrong.

Haha man I guess I really do need a new computer. Yours is actually better than mine. Combofix and Malwarebytes will definitely take care of most malware infections.

The other good one is adwCleaner off bleeping computer (same place as combofix). Be sure its off bleeping computer, not any other site...a lot of sites use fakes that contain viruses. Even if the link is 1st on google search, its not always safe.

Never had to use any form of virus/malware scanner in my whole life. But then I don't run cracked games and visit strange websites.

There are only 10 or so sites I visit, some of which are cnn, espn soccer, sky sports, this forum and few other forums. That's it. Unless I am researching something I don't visit any other websites.

Well, I don't go to strange websites either. And all my games come from GOG, Steam or Amazon. I even use a script blocker and an addon blocker with firefox. So actually, I don't even see ads on youtube or anything :P Most viruses often actually come from ads.

Don't think I've personally had a virus in years. Last time I had one, came from accidentally clicking a link in an email about my WoW account being banned but found out it was a fake. It was a really good fake, and I had just woken up on top of that...whoops :P But that was years ago back in 2009.

My first thought was RAM too but you have plenty, so I would say GPU, especially for modern games. Or maybe you need to find some joy in good ol' classic DOS games, ran like a champ on my 386!

Its my GPU. I forgot to post about it. But I finished testing about 15 min ago.

I tested the PSU and GPU.

I put in the backup PSU dad had, and it was still doing it. Which means its definitely a graphics card issue and not a power supply issue. But...I put in the 6600GT and it still caused issues. But I couldn't really test it properly since its SUPER old. So maybe its broken too, its just been collecting dust for years.

Put my graphics card in dads PC. But the graphics card in dads PC was still causing issues for him. So it is definitely not my hardware or virus or anything like that. All my dad's hardware is fine, and as soon as my graphics card was put in...his PC was getting artifacts and stuff when he was putting it under heavy use. He took it out and replaced it with his own graphics card, and it fixed the problem.

For now, the GPU is back in my own PC. It does work I guess, but it doesn't work when word+youtube is open or its under any kind of heavy use. We think the video ram is bad, and so when it uses a certain amount of ram...it finally hits the ram that is bad.

If we can make it happen (dad and me), I "might" be able to buy a 970 GTX off amazon. Its more modern, has tons of video ram, and can do anything thrown at it. But money is super tight, so we'll see. I'd know next month, but with the huge amount of rent and bills...I dunno.

It be good for my youtube videos I do though. My graphics card was never able to do good gaming videos like the professional youtubers use (like totalbiscuit and other let's players). Plus faster and better rendering for my nature videos.

Curiousity, did you just re-install, or did you do a complete re-format of the whole machine where you have to re-install windows and everything?

Simply overwriting doesn't always fix things.  Completely reformating is an all day process, and requires all discs, but it is usually a reliable fix since most of your stuff seems not too bad.

btw, since I do gaming videos like Totalbiscuit does, and other more regular let's plays of games. On top of my nature videos. A 200 dollar walmart PC wouldn't actually work out too well :P The 970 GTX itself is 350 dollars. And if I want to replace everything, it adds up to be 1000 dollars to 1500 dollars for a high end gaming PC.

To compare, totalbiscuit uses a 1000+ dollar GPU, the GTX Titan :P But I don't want something like that, the power it uses would make the power bill go WAY up. that's too much for what I do right now.

I had over 15k youtube subscribers on my game channel at one point (think it hit close to 16k but not quite there), but my PC started acting up and I haven't uploaded any videos for a while because I could never upgrade it. And all my subscribers wanted me to play newer games, so I lost a lot of views. I did get paid by youtube, can't say how much...wasn't much, but hey. But since I can't even closely even do my current games for youtube, that came to an abrupt stop and I lost most of my subscribers. I think my last game video was of skyrim, but it was so laggy and terrible looking that it cost me a lot of subscribers. So I stopped after that.

My nature channel had 19k subscribers at one point, but it went down A LOT. I haven't checked in a while though now.

(edit:

I completely reformated. Twice.

I tried it on an old hard drive, but it ended up dying a week later (it was old).

And then a brand new install on a brand new hard drive.

Also, like I said. I put in my GPU in dad's pc and he automatically started getting the same symptoms. Artifacts and all kinds of things when he put the GPU under stress. So its the GPU for sure, but not sure if my PSU or CPU is faulty...can't really test those properly. I did put my CPU under heavy stress and it was fine...so its probably just the GPU)
