Could Lasius slip out of those ventilation holes? I also recommend putting a bead of silicone around the sponges because you don’t want ants getting in there. Otherwise, looks supremely awesome!

I have to admit, the lid is pretty flush to the whole of the top but I will definitely do that next time Drew, good shout!

Bugger! What’s my alternate then Drew? Surely the formicarium needs some small amount of air flow to prevent mould etc

I think you can rip off a little cotton and plug the ventilation holes, so then no ants can fit out but air can still travel freely.

Purely for aesthetics sake, that doesnt sound like the best idea. I would say just leave this formicarium for the larger species or try drilling smaller holes, I've been able to make holes even Temnothorax can't get through just by using a very thin heated needle.

I think another entry hole drilled on the side and stuffed with cotton would be plenty of ventilation. You could also consider gluing 100 micron mesh. The holes would be perfect as is for larger species like Camponotus or Formica.

I'd get fine metal mesh (0.2mm mesh width) and glue it over the holes (aquarium/kitchen silicone). That should work even for tiny ants like Solenopsis molesta.

I guess, but if you were to house a small species, I’d plug it. Otherwise it’s good I guess.
