Just ordered two colonies (C. Vicinus, P. Subnitidus) and both arrived in perfect health with no brood eaten. Would definitely recommend Sleepy as someone to buy from if you live in California.

For some reason I just happened to look at this,if using paypal, friends and family is the worst possible way to pay. It does not prevent scams in any way. What it does do is cheat Paypal out of their piece of the action and even worse gives the buyer absolutely no recourse if their is a problem. Any  seller that requires payment in this manner should be avoided.

I don't want to risk getting scammed; potential scammers using the business option could initiate refunds after receiving ants, resulting in a lengthy and frankly annoying disputing and arguing process, which could result in me losing a significant amount of money. I just don't want to go through that hassle. My reputation as a seller should be enough to assure potential buyers, and anyone who has bought from me in the past can confirm that I won't scam, lie, or steal. Also, as you might have noticed, the friends-and-family option is required by many other sellers, all of whom are very reputable. The simple issue is trust, does the customer trust the seller? You can just look at my reviews and determine for yourself whether or not I am trustworthy.

Actually since in the very first post here the use of friends and family is recommended as a payment option by the seller and a way to prevent scams which it does not, I understand that many safe and reputable sellers use the option however it is cheating paypal out of their 3percent or whatever the fee is these days, and your paypal privileges can be taken away. In addition if you use this option you have no buyer protection if the seller does prove to be a scammer.

Doesn't it go both ways? A seller can be scammed by a buyer by keeping the product and asking for a refund? I remember this happened to me and a few other people as selllers, but not over ants.

It doesn't cheat PayPal out of anything, PayPal takes a cut as a liability contingency, when you use friends and family you're trusting a seller and the liability doesn't need to be accounted for as you're willing to shoulder it instead of PayPal.

There are also lower chances of the sellers actually being scammers compared to the buyers. Sellers have track records which can be measured in part by the replies posted to the thread. Buyers have basically no track record. A random person could easily make a new account on formiculture and request a refund even after receiving live ants.
