I was in my yard digging carefully in some bare spots in the grass because it's egg laying season for turtles and I like to mark out which spots have eggs so we don't disturb the nest. So there I was, digging in the dirt, when I saw these tiny tiny things carrying what looked like little white pieces of sand and I knew it had to be ants. Though I have never seen ants this small before. Luckily there were no turtle eggs in that bare spot and we put the small rocks that the ants called home back where we found them and covered them back up with loose dirt.

1. Location of collection: My backyard. Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

2. Date of collection: June 11, 2020
3. Habitat of collection: In the dirt in my grassy backyard.
4. Length: 1-2mm They won't sit still very long. The dirt blob it is sitting on is about 5mm in length.
5. Coloration, hue, pattern and texture: Orange/Red or translucent Brown.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Too small to tell
7. Anything else distinctive:
8. Nest description: In the dirt under some small rocks

9. Nuptial flight time and date: N/A

Couldn't get great pictures because they are soooo tiny.

Lol I know. I just thought calling them egg stealers would be funny. I also wasn't planning on keeping them because they're so small so I didn't read much into their dietary needs.

Another name for this species is Thief Ant. I have tried to raise a few colonies but something always happens. I gave up on them. I don't want a colony that can die from a drop of water lol. They are really cool tho and grow fast.
