I can't tell the difference between fire ants and pheidole.

Indeed Solenopsis, most likely xyloni. Pheidole are very different, flat and squared off, posessing a head similar to a majors and being very rough in texture (usually)
xyloni are good natives. No need to worry.

I do not believe these are polygynous. I would keep them separate.

Has anyone ever successfully contained them? They seem to outgrow everyone setups to fast and are sold or released.
