Hello all, I am here upon the recommendation of a friend, and look forward to expanding my knowledge of ants and invertebrates in general.

I am currently ant-colony-less (I have tried and failed to keep what was likely a RIFA queen in the past, but that was probably a good thing...), though I am hoping to change that sometime in the near future. Otherwise I am a jack-of-all-trades in the wider hobby of inverteculture, keeping everything from millipedes to tarantulas to isopods to roaches.

I am the proprietor of the blog arthroverts.org, the founder and leader of the Invertebrate Club of Southern California, founding member of the Velvet Worm Club, and am involved in various other forums. I can be found by the same name on Arachnoboards, Allpets Roach Forum, Beetle Forum, the Diplopoda.de Forum, Das International Käeferforum, and the Reef2Reef forum.

Thanks,

Arthroverts

Welcome! Great to see more ant keepers out there. Perhaps our organizations can benefit from each other.

Many thanks for the welcome! I am already surprised to see so many Southern Californians (and South Dakotans) on here...

@AntsDakota, tell me more! Though I have to confess I am surprised there are even people in South Dakota...isn't it just one large swath of field with the occasional stone head sticking out of some big rocks?  :D

Just kidding, just kidding.

Thanks,

On the contrary. In fact, if there's one thing I enjoy talking about just as much as ants, it's my state.  :D Most people do think of it like this, but in fact, it's so much more. Such beauty, and diverse culture. As far as beauty and diverse landscapes go, 'East River', as it's locally called, (anything east of the Missouri River, i.e. half the state) is very fertile land, where most farmland is, yet it is also where most of the population is concentrated. The largest city, Sioux Falls, is home to a large and beautiful waterfall, known as the Falls (very creative, I know  ), and lots of beautiful pink quartzite, which used to be a big industry back in its day (yet is still mined today). Downtown Sioux Falls is pretty much built from it. And a few dozen miles west of Sioux Falls, the town of Mitchell is home to the World's Only Corn Palace. It's walls are built entirely out of corn!

And moving on, anything west of the Missouri River is known as 'West River', and is more arid and dry. Here you'll find the beautiful Badlands, filled with gorgeous rock formations, and even some desert species, such as Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (Western Harvester Ants). It was even made into a national park.

And actually, Mt. Rushmore isn't some random rock sticking out of a prairie. It is part of the Black Hills, a small mountain range which is actually taller than the Appalachians out east. It is a major tourist destinations, with lots of diverse wildlife. Some beautiful places within the Black Hills include Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, Bridal Veil Falls, and Hot Springs.

So, as you can probably tell, we South Dakotans are pretty proud of our state, and I for one love sharing out it. Hope you can stop by and visit someday.  :D

Thank you for enlightening me! That is really good to know. I actually just remembered I will be visiting South Dakota on the West River side this very month! What are the odds...

I am interested in hearing more about The SoDAK, and perhaps what you had in mind for how our corresponding groups could benefit each other?

Thanks,

The SoDAK actually isn’t a true organization, just a little ‘club’ (I guess you could call it that) of South Dakotans, which I hope to expand in the next few years. As for our organizations, I mean Formiculture and the Invertebrate Club. We seem to have similar interests and goals, and we could learn a lot from each other, in every way. Perhaps some of your people may start keeping ants, and vice verse (although many ant keepers already keep tarantulas, scorpions, and other arthropods
(this journal is a good read: https://www.formicul...rts/?hl=inverts).

And yes, I am very proud of my state. We don't have boatloads of people here, and enjoy out lives in peace.

AntsDakota, that is basically what the ICSC is actually, ha ha. A club revolving around our shared passion and interest, whether it be for ants or arachnids. We aren't a "true" organization, and very well may never be.

Ah, gotcha. Several members actually already keep ants, and it was one of them (don't know his username on here, but elsewhere he goes by "MantidMaster") who recommended me to this forum to increase my knowledge.

Ants_Dakota, awesome! 'Twas with 7 members at the first meeting that we started the club, and it has been growing ever since.

Thanks,
