I doubt the 10mm measurement, but these are Pheidole.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

This is a Pheidole queen; Cali folks will likely have a better idea of the species.

Species is pretty much impossible without microscope pictures.

Does the species matter very much? And should I separate them?

No, the species doesn't really matter.

I believe the majority of Californian Pheidole are polygynous.

"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version

Keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans

Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea

Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra

Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Pheidole bicarinata

Myrmica sp.

Lasius neoniger, brevicornis

I don't think that is necessarily true.

Not all Pheidole are polygonus, if you have a bunch of queens, you can try and put a few in two queen pairs. Then you can see if they will accept each other. But often, most Pheidole sp. are polygonus.

Edit: So the species does matter, at least in concerns of when you put them together. As different species may or may not be polygonus as I stated previously.
