Would this be a good investment? I like how it would be easily portable. You could hang it up anywhere basically.

Not if you intend to use it to collect queens, however if you are looking for scorpions it could be useful.

Why? Is it not strong enough?

Lots of people have caught queens using black lights.

They are generally not strong enough so although you may get some results they will not be great. I use a black light on many occasions, always have the best results with a standard black light tube hung against a white sheet.

I'm genuinely interested to see if these work. Don't know if it would attract any queens, still worth a shot.
KEEPER OF:
Tapinoma Sessile (founding) x3
Tapinoma Sessile x1
Camponotus Pennsyvanicus x2
Prenolepis Imparis (founding) x2
Myrmecina Americana (founding) x1

Also, do ants/queens glow under these lights like with scorpions?

No. At least, most don't.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I just bought a cheap 9 watt bulb at Home Depot. I screwed it into my patio light. I’ll see how it works.
