Yep, it should work! Can I use a thin plastic bottle for the container? Like one of those shorter and tinier ones.

I'm pretty sure this hasn't been mentioned in this thread (so sorry if I'm wrong) but I would suggest using something like this:
https://www.amazon.c...language=en_US
in addition to the cloth filter to make sure filter out any really tiny dust particles, spores, etc.
Aphaenogaster cf. rudis
Tetramorium immigrans
Tapinoma sessile
Formica subsericea
Pheidole sp.
Camponotus nearcticus

Yup mentioned, I am a firm believer in these things.
I made one! I used a coffee filter for the filter.
Also I accidentally inhaled some formic acid from some Formica ants. Is that harmful at all? I just got a weird feeling in my mouth and my lungs felt kinda weird. No bad pain.
Pls help.

I had my first Tetramorium escape today.
Luckily, yesterday I finished my 'Mad's do-it-yourself- aspirator'!!!
The cool thing about mine is that I can replace the containers. So I can suction and then place a new container onto the aspirator and put a top on the other one. That way I can aspirate different brood and colonies on the same occasion. They're prescribed pill containers.Take a look:
Also, there are basically two sections to the lid. I put sealant between the two lids and kinda sandwiched them together. This way there are no escapees and it looks kinda clean. I use this sealant for all my anting needs. It's great and flexible.
I put some thicker stretchy cloth on the suction pipe today. Sealed it with an elastic and glue from the glue gun.
And boy did I need it today. Works great! Plan on taking it into the field tomorrow.
BIG thanks to Mad!!!!!
You may not want the cloth hot glued on, the cloth will probably get dirty and need cleaned/replaced after a time.I had my first Tetramorium escape today.

Sorry for the necropost, but I just got around to making one of these. I cannot thank Mad enough for this guide! The aspirator works like a charm when collecting brood, ants, and the like.
I would HIGHLY recommend making one of these if you have frequent escapees or are out in the field collecting ants often. Thank's Mad!
