So, i am interested in everyone's tips on aphaenogaster. I have an a. tennesseensis colony and 2 a. rudis colonies. I don't know if any of the colonies have queens, but i hear that the queens are almost the same sized as the workers.

What seeds do they like best? They seem to like sunflower seeds, but mine do not like the grass seeds that well.

Next time you go to the store you could get some sunflower seeds.

My A. tennesseensis love almond.

 

Also, the queens are often small, but definitely noticeable.

My A. rudis colony loves any sorts of nuts (especially cashews). I also find that they love pretty much any larger seed but if they don't immediately accept it, crush it open.

I’ve never tried this with them, but two seeds I think any seed eating ant would like are shelled hemp hearts and crushed pine nuts. They’re both super soft, high fat seeds.

I find that subterranean termites are always on the menu for all the species I have. Fruit flies will be taken but not always.

Is this the case even for some of the more cryptic, smaller species such as Stenamma or Ponera? I've struggled with getting those to eat fruit flies, but termites seem to be quite rare here.
