i'm creating this thread to serve as a journal that I can look back on and see how my anting goals change over time.  Feel free to ignore it, or enjoy it, as you wish.

 

 

2020:

- Purchase this microscope and this camera mount.   - this goal moved to 2021

- Get my new Tetramorium (sp) started strong - this colony didn't make it.

- Purchase two dirt box nests from Drew - This goal moved to 2021

- grow my C. Sansabegnus into this nest:  Large Bull Ant Castle    - This colony didn't make it.

+ Purchase a  young colony - bought a C. sansabeanus colony 4/26

 

2021:

- Purchase P. Californicus colony and put in one of drews "dirt box" nests.

- Collect C. Vicinus queen and start new colony - Purchased a founding colony on 2/22/21

- Collect Linepithema humile queen and start new colony

- Purchase this formicarium for the L. Humile:  

- Purchase this nest for my C. Vicinus: Large Bull Ant Castle

- Get my vacant formicaria out of storage and use one of my nucleuses for the vicinus colony.

- Purchase this microscope and this camera mount   - purchased 3/2021

- Purchase two dirt box nests from Drew

 

Someday:

- Purchase Myrmecocystus mexicanus colony

- Purchase Acromyrmex versicolor colony

My goals for the 2020 season:

 

Sustain Neivamyrmex colonies

 

Raise Camponotus chromaidodes colony to maturity

 

Get Colobopsis mississippiensis

  • Really grow my Camponotus Pennsylvanicus colony.
  • Find some queens this summer (Specifically Formica or something).

Yeah. I have a lot of goals. Most are quite possible though, I have seen everything on the list, except the orange Lasius.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

All parasitic Lasius are orange, and there are dozens of species.

I am hoping for Acanthomyops, but I would be equally happy with brevicornis.

to grow one of those colonies, do you have to have a sacraficial colony?

Which ones? The Manica? No. But I read they like to eat other ants. The Acanthomyops, yes.

Yes, Acanthomyops are a subgenus of Lasius, but they only need host workers in the beginning. They arent like Polyergus.

I believe Polyergus can found with just host workers, too.

Nope. Polyergus are obligate slave raiders.
